Manufactured from steel or brass a butt hinge consists of 2 leaves and a connecting pin which secures the leaves which pivot around this pin. Most steel and brass hinges have a fixed pin which means the connecting pin is secured in the hinge or with button top and bottom. Therefore, the pin cannot be removed.
However, loose pin hinges are available, used in conjunction with internal doors. The pin can be removed which facilitates the removal of the door without having to undo the fixing screws. Double steel washer hinges are available as solid brass hinges and have 2 steel washers separating each knuckle for smoother movement and to extend life. Used on heavy and fire doors.
How to measure steel and brass hinges
Lay the hinge open and on a flat surface and with a tape measure or ruler measure the length then the width and if required the thickness When sourcing hinges, the first measurement is usually the length and the second is the width followed by thickness.
Brass door hinges are manufactured from solid drawn self-colour brass with a brass pin but 4” 100mm is also available with a polished finished. Being solid brass they will not deteriorate through time. Available from 40mm to 100mm.
