Plastic wall plugs, often referred to as Rawl plugs are available in Yellow Red and Brown and are very convenient for DIY lightweight applications.
As with the cut to length plugs these are colour coded which has become an industry standard.
Wall plug sizes and “you ask what size do I need?” That will be determined by the weight of the item, the number and size of screws used to fix it. E.g. London Grey shelf brackets will require M4.0 x 40 to M5.0 x 50 depending on the size and number of brackets so selecting red or brown plugs would be the best choice
Yellow plugs are 25mm long and drill size 5.0 - 5.5mm for small screws M3.0 - M3.5mm diameter
Red plugs are 30mm long and drill size 5.5 - 6.0mm for screws M4.0 - M5.0mm diameter
Brown plugs are 36mm long and drill size 6.5 - 7.0mm for larger screws M5.0 – M6.0mm diameter
Very affordable and easy to use, there are 000’s of uses for these plugs from hanging pictures fixing a hook to a wall, fitting hanging baskets, securing wooden batons brackets to masonry, concrete, brickwork, blocks and stone. Not suitable for hollow walls, dry-lined walls or lathe and plaster walls
Using the correct drill size, drill the hole deeper than the length of the plug and tap the plug into place until it is flush with the surface of the wall. Assemble the fixture e.g. a bracket and place the point of the screw into the centre of the wall plug and tighten until firm.
Please note plastic wall plugs are not suitable for hollow stud walls, plasterboard, dry-lined and lathe and plaster walls.
Handy to have a box of each in the workshop as you never know when you will need some
