Electrical Accessories

Electrical DIY projects - if you are not totally sure about what you are doing then get a professional electrician  to advise or do the job.

Electrical accessories can be subdivided into two sub categories i.e. products which require to be installed in accordance with the 18th edition IEE Wiring Regulation. The other category includes products which just fulfil a need such as plug in adaptors and travel adaptors, shaver and toothbrush adapters. Extension leads, cable reels etc.

Switches

Light switches with 1, 2 or 3 switches and 1 or 2 way meaning a light can we switched from a single or two locations.

Intermediate light switches for stairways.

Appliance switches and Spur units fused and unfused usually with 1 switch and are used to isolate fridges etc

Cookers, hobs and immersion heaters switches will require a higher rating 20amp or 45amp.

A back box which holds all the wires and connections is reuired for all switches.

Metalclad switches for garages are supplied complete with the back box and are surface mounted.

Waterproof switches for outdoor or damp locations, supplied complete with the back box and surface mounted.

 

Pull-cord ceiling switches 

Pull-cord ceiling switches are available as a light switch for bathrooms and a 45amp version for electric showers. Activated with a pull cord to switch on /off.

Inline cord switch 

Inline table lamp rocker switch is fitted into the wire which leads to the lamp.

 

Sockets

Sockets often referred to as 13 amp wall sockets and are available as single or double, un-switched and switched sockets and some with indicator lights and usb outlets.

Metalclad sockets are surface mounted, used in garages and industrial applications

Waterproof sockets for outdoor or damp locations are surface mounted.

 

Back boxes

Light switches, appliance switches and wall sockets will require a back-box, the name derives from the box containing the connecting wires behind or at the back of the switch or socket. Available as a metal back box in 1 and 2 gang versions and 25mm, 35mm and 47mm deep. The depth depends on the number and thickness of the wires being used.

Dry lining boxes 35mm deep, are used in hollow or plasterboard walls were where a flush fit is required.

Surface mounted boxes include Pattress boxes where the cables access through the back of the box and Knockout boxes which are designed for the side entry of the conduit which carry the cables.  

Blanking plates to cover back boxes when no switch or socket is fitted.

 

Light fittings

Ceiling pendants, ceiling rose, lampholder, batten lampholder andtable lampholders are part of the light fittings range. 

 

Electrical cable connectors 

Junction boxes are used for joining wires or running a spur from an electrical circuit safely. If you need to join two or more electrical wires or repair damaged cable, then you should use a junction box.

Connection boxes - âChoc-boxâ when fitting recessed lighting these connection boxes are supplied with a 3 way 15amp block connector and cable clamps. It will fit through the opening for the light.

Block or strip connectors. Available 5, 15 and 30amp rated and supplied as a 12 way strip which can be subdivided to meet your requirements.

 

Cable clips, cable ties and electrical tape

Cable clips with a hardened steel nail are used to securely fix round and flat twin and earth cables to walls or joists. From small bell-wire clips up to heavy 10mm cooker cable

Cable ties are fasteners that bundle your cables and wires together to keep them organized and prevent damage and have 00âs of other uses in the home, garden workshop and farm. They come in different sizes and lengths

Electrical insulating tape is a type of pressure-sensitive vinyl tape used to insulate electrical wires and other materials that conduct electricity. It is versatile and it stretches well and gives an effective and long lasting insulation. Available in 8 colours including a green and yellow stripe to identify earth wires

 

Plug-top and consumer unit fuses

Plug-top fuses are used to protect the appliance and are rated 3amp, 5amp and 13amp and available in assorted or rating packs

Consumer unit fuse-links protect the various single phase electrical circuits in the home or building. Manufactured to Asta certification. If you have a consumer unit that uses these fuse links, then itâs necessary to keep spares.

 

Extension leads, Surge protected leads and Cable reels

Extension and surge protected leads are very convenient to extend the lead or plug in multiple devices. Supplied with a 2m flex cord, 13 amp plug-top and a 4 outlet block however the surge protected used for computers and electronic devices have either 4, 6 outlets and a 10 outlet tower.

 

Adaptors 

Adaptors A 2 way unfused and 3 way fused block version accepts the plugs on the sides or top of the block.

The plug through adaptor 2 usb. Frees up the 3 pin socket and have 2 usb outlets for charging mobile phones. No more changing plugs essential for every home.

Need to charge an electric shaver or toothbrush our shaver adaptor allows you to plug in the 2 pin plug to a standard 3 pin socket.

  

Travel Adaptors
