London Grey Shelf Brackets

Putting up that shelf can be every diyerâs nightmare, whether it is in the home, shed or garage but it need not be so if a few simple instructions are followed

There are numerous systems and types of shelving supports but we are discussing here using the traditional bracket often referred to as London Grey Bracket which are finished in grey and are paintable to match dÃcor. They are a strong bracket which can support up to 20kg but the method of securing the bracket depends on the construction of the wall and on the weight of the items on the shelf.

What size of bracket?

Normally the longer leg of the bracket is fitted to the wall and the shorter to support the shelf. E.G. paperback books a 5x4 bracket is suitable and a 12x10 bracket for a 12â shelf for lever arch files. As a rule of thumb the bracket leg supporting the shelf should be a minimum of 2/3rd the width of the shelf e.g. a 12â shelf would need 10â brackets

How many brackets

While the width of the shelf will determine the size of the bracket required and the length of the shelf determines the number of brackets e.g. a 36â long shelf would need at least 2 brackets or more depending on the loading. 72â at least 4 brackets. For heavy items just fit more brackets.

When establishing the position, if critical, allow for the thickness of the wooden shelf

In Solid Walls

Check for electrical cables and pipes BEFORE drilling holes

What size of Drill and wall plug?

If using Red wall plugs use a 6mm masonry drill or Brown wall plugs use a 7mm masonry drill

In drywall or Hollow Walls.

Find the position of the wall support studs using a stud finder or lightly tap the wall and the sound will change when the stud is located Fixing into the plasterboard using wing toggles or speed plugs is not recommended as the carrying capacity will be dramatically reduced

What size of screw

For smaller brackets use a pozidrive countersunk screw size 4.0mm (No8) x 40mm (1-1/2â) or 50mm (2â)

But for larger brackets use a pozi drive countersunk screw size 5.0mm (No10) x 50mm (2â)

Installing the brackets

Mark the position of the holes in the first bracket and after fixing use a level to make sure your planned bracket locations are along a straight, level line. This will ensure your shelves are level after installation.
